Nigeria's political landscape is in turmoil this weekend as a storm of controversies threatens to shake the foundations of the country's democracy ahead of the critical 2027 general elections. From explosive bribery allegations against the electoral commission to an embattled opposition party tearing itself apart, Abuja is at the centre of a political earthquake.

Wike Accused of Bribing INEC Officials with Land and Cash

The most explosive story in Nigerian politics right now centres on allegations that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, offered prime Abuja land and cash gifts worth over $50,000 each to more than 29 senior officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Sources within INEC told investigative outlets that land allocations within the Federal Capital Territory were extended to numerous top commission officials — raising deeply troubling questions about the independence and credibility of Nigeria's electoral umpire ahead of the 2027 elections.

What makes the story even more damning is that one senior INEC official has reportedly admitted to receiving land. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Supervising National Commissioner for the FCT, was quoted as confirming receipt of a land gift from the minister — an admission that has sent shockwaves through political circles nationwide.

The allegations suggest what critics are calling a deliberate "land-for-favour" scheme, aimed at compromising officials at the agency most critical to Nigeria's electoral process.

 PDP Demands INEC Come Clean

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted furiously, describing the allegations as "very disturbing and worrisome." In a strongly worded statement, the party's National Publicity Secretary Comrade Ini Ememobong demanded that INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan publicly address the scandal — including allegations that he himself may be among the beneficiaries.

The PDP said the allegations "deepen the erosion of public trust in an electoral umpire with a legacy of stained credibility," and called on the commission to "ensure that transparency and impartiality are not just slogans but evident in both its words and actions."

The opposition also drew attention to what it called a suspicious pattern — that these land gifts appear specifically targeted at officials in agencies critical to elections, while teachers, healthcare workers, and security officials receive no such treatment.

Opposition Leaders Storm INEC Headquarters

The political tension spilled into the streets on Wednesday when a coalition of opposition leaders — including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor Peter Obi, former Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso — staged a protest at INEC's headquarters in Abuja.

Carrying placards reading "Save Democracy", "Let the Opposition Breathe", and "Operation Defend Democracy", the protesters demanded the formal recognition of a rival party leadership and the immediate resignation of INEC Chairman Prof. Amupitan.

In a protest letter submitted to INEC, opposition leaders accused the commission of bias, alleging that Amupitan had overstepped his constitutional authority by interpreting court judgments in ways that favoured certain political factions.

Atiku described the demonstration as a peaceful effort to challenge perceived electoral partisanship and defend Nigeria's democracy. "This is a defining test of statesmanship," a diaspora group supporting the opposition declared. "The right thing must be done."

 PDP Headquarters Unsealed After Court Battle

Adding to the chaos, the Nigeria Police Force this weekend unsealed the PDP National Secretariat at Wadata Plaza in Abuja, as well as Legacy House in Maitama — handing control back to a faction of the party's leadership in compliance with court orders.

The unsealing follows a bitter internal power struggle within the PDP that has seen rival factions fight over the party's leadership, assets, and direction ahead of 2027. The party's convention recently produced a new leadership structure, but reconciliation efforts remain incomplete, with senior figures including FCT Minister Wike and Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde at loggerheads over the party's future.

The PDP also formally expelled Wike and other key members from the party in a move that deepens the crisis further.

 INEC Postpones Voter Revalidation

In a separate but significant development, INEC has announced the postponement of its nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general election — a decision critics say raises further questions about the commission's readiness and commitment to a credible electoral process.
